Lost Horizon - Awakening The World

2001 Music For Nations |Rating: 5 / 5 | Reviewed by Metal Messiah

Lost Horizon is a new band that features former members of Hammerfall before they got signed, so the musicians in this band are no newcomers to Metal. Their debut album Awakening The World really blew me away when I first heard it, and it has proven to have real staying power as I still find myself listening to it more then 6 months after itís release.

Like Hammerfall, Lost Horizon also play Power Metal, but that is where the similarities end. Where Hammerfall have a very traditional sound, Lost Horizon play traditional Metal with a very modern sound. They have a style all their own, and really donít sound like any other band out there. In fact, I think that Lost Horizon is a better overall band then their former band mates. This album is full of burners that demonstrate their great musicianship and song writing skills. As you can expect from most Power Metal bands, they have fast double bass drumming, guitar harmonies and intelligible leads galore. The bass playing is tight, and the singer really shines on this album. His vocal range is amazing. His regular singing style is not in the high register like most singers of the genre, but he can really hit the high screams a la Halford with the best of them. They truly did live up to all the hype I heard about them on the internet, prior to the release of their debut album here in the U.S.

The production for this album is excellent. Everything is clear, and you can hear each instrument with ease. It truly is a pleasure to listen to it. The cover art is pretty cool, and the booklet contains the lyrics to all the songs as well as pictures of the band, which look like they just stepped off the set of Braveheart. When I first saw the cover it did kind of discourage me from buying it since Iím not really into all that fruity shit, but I have grown to like it.

The song themselves are easy to relate to, and are a celebration of being a TRUE Metal Head. While all the songs are great on this album, my personal favorites are Heart Of Storm and Sworn In The Metal Wind. I would recommend this album to all Hammerfall fans as well as all Power Metal fans. This album truly is a gem, and I really hope their next album is just as good.
